The theoretical body through which this practice is located is framed through a critical definition of ‘Utopia’, in an attempt to mobilise how the narrative of coloured identity could be explored in the realm of theatrical performance. I explore the politics of naming and its impact both from an intrinsic and extrinsic perspective in relation to a personal identity narrative. This production attempts to disrupt normative ideological and cultural constraints and investigate the performance of coloured identity through the use of individual and collective memory. I did this through a devising process that consisted of broadly two stages: The first was to conduct interviews with people who self-identify as coloured and video the conversations. The second stage saw the recordings as source material which a cast of four devised from. The intention of the production was to create a space where the audience would bear witness to an attempted re-imagining of a coloured identity narrative.
