The World Health Organization (WHO) has set a goal of ensuring healthy lives and promotion of well-being for all at all ages (Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3) by the year 2030. This goal can be achieved by reducing morbidity and mortality through remote vital signs monitoring and management. Therefore, through the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication in the monitoring and management of these vital signs, a lot of ground can be covered in ensuring healthy lives and achieving SDG #3. This paper discusses a solution that automates the transmission, monitoring, and management of vital signs data thereby offering a platform for proactive response to the effects of disease. This work, through the use of standards-compliant M2M middleware and open-source software, has developed an initial prototype to demonstrate the viability of such an implementation.
