Multi-Tenant MANO of Edge and Core 5G Networks
The demand for telecommunication services and diversity of traffic patterns has been growing at a fast pace over the years. In spite of this, the profitability of the industry has been on the decline. This has resulted in the industry looking at solutions like virtualization, resource sharing and business model restructure among others. At the same time, the fifth generation (5G) network is being designed to cater for industrial growth, while also introducing changes that ease implementation of the identified solutions, e.g., decoupling of the control and user plane. This paper looks at some of the proposed technologies and concepts that enable the implementation of these solutions which include, cloudification, software defined networks, network function virtualization, network slicing and edge networks etc. The paper further proposes an architecture, called the sub-sliced dvCloud 5G architecture, composed of these technologies and concepts. Hence, the paper identifies that the successful consolidation of these technologies and concepts depends on their coherent management and orchestration (MANO). Thereafter, the paper focuses on the design of a MANO system for edge and core 5G networks using the composed sub-sliced dvCloud NG 5G architecture.
