The Citizen Placemaking Toolkit was put together by the Masters in Landscape Architecture students from the University of Cape Town as part of their Innovation Course. The course focused on essentialising water-sensitive design approaches and nature-based solutions in retrofitting urban waterways such as stormwater systems in South Africa. Stormwater ponds currently form part of the urban stormwater management system of Cape Town, engineered solely to delay and detain stormwater during storm events.
