dataset
posted on 2024-10-31, 11:01 authored by Nicola WellsNicola Wells, Deano Stynder

This database was created as part of the 2024 Masters Thesis: An Investigation of OES Bead Size Variability and Introduction of Cup Morphology by Nicola Wells (Supervisors Assoc Prof Deano Stynder and Dr Wendy Black).

The database includes the following information about the OES bead/preform samples collected for the study:

  • General Site (name of the site);
  • Identifier (information listed on the bag or box from which the sample was obtained, typically including the square and/or layer associated with the sample. If the sample was a preform, the stage number was also provided. In cases where multiple samples belonged to the same stage, unique numbers were assigned to each);
  • Specific Site Location (the square or site designation or year of excavation);
  • Additional Info (site name, possible bag descriptions that were too long for the identifier, stage of manufacture, Cup description);
  • Uncal Date (associated layer date where applicable);
  • Approx Date (the bracketed date range for the sample);
  • Stage (stage of manufacture of the sample according to Orton (2008));
  • Bead Diameter (in mm);
  • Aperture Diameter (in mm);
  • Cup Diameter Side 1 (cuticle surface, in mm);
  • Cup Diameter Side 2 (mammillary surface, in mm);
  • Shell Thickness (in mm)
