The study, undertaken for the South African Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Environment (DFFE), models a number of possible net zero CO2 pathways for South Africa, and the economic impacts of these, using several different GHG constraints over the modelling period.

The study uses the ESRG's SATIMGE modelling framework, which links the national energy model SATIM (built on the TIMES platform) with a CGE model (ESAGE) with more detail in the electricity sector.

This initial techno-economic study describes the likely characteristics of net zero pathways for South Africa and identifies areas for additional work, as an input to further techno-eocnomic and policy analysis of South Africa's options for a long-term low-emissions pathway.
