Comments on: Insufficient precautionary management of South Africa’s purse-seine fishery for conservation of the African Penguin (FISHERIES/2013/SWG-PEL/ICTT/4) by Pichegru et al.
Responses are provided to claims made in document FISHERIES/2013/SWG-PEL/ICTT/4 that the management of South Africa’s purse-seine fishery is inadequately precautionary for the conservation of African penguins, and some replies by the original authors to those responses are also shown. Issues discussed include the statistical significance of results, “availability” of anchovy, the distinction between biomass and production, prey preferences of penguins, and the appropriate period for closures in the island closure experiment.
