On the Possible Implementation of the Recommendations of the Lenfest Report

<p dir="ltr">The Lenfest’s report’s recommendations are based on the IUCN red-list “vulnerable” criterion, proposing in essence that there should be no more than a 5% probability that a dependent predator species will be reduced to below 50% of Bo. It is argued that such a criterion is too stringent, requiring for example suspension of fishing on many of SA’s fish populations (including hake) despite these not being considered to be under any serious threat from present fishing levels. it is suggested that in the context of their possible local application, the Lenfest recommendations would need to be revised to correspond to a less stringent criterion</p>
