Following feedback received during the December International Workshop, some aspects of the Robben Island penguin model have been changed. Of particular concern was the large discrepancy between the observed and model predicted numbers of birds re-sighted for birds which were tagged in the years 1990 and 1992 (Figure 5 in MARAM IWS/DEC11/P/PENG/WP3). In order to address this, the selections for “transient mortality” and immigration have been re-worked, as well as the functional form of the relationship between penguin adult survival and prey abundance.
