Bruce has a degree in Geomatics from the University of Cape Town and is a Professional Land Surveyor in South Africa. From 2007 to 2011 he practiced as a surveyor in Cape Town and worked on many different projects including cadastral, topographical, photogrammetric and engineering surveys. In 2012 Bruce moved to Canada where he continued his survey career. From 2013 to 2015 he worked in Scotland where he continued with topographical and engineering type surveys. 2015 was mostly spent performing dimensional control surveys in the construction of oil rigs on the east coast of Scotland. He then returned to South Africa and has continued his surveying career. In 2017 he began assisting Professor Heinz Rüther and the Zamani Project at the University of Cape Town and is now a full time member of the team.
