A panorama tour of the ruined Jagger Library at UCT

This panorama tour showcases the state of the University of Cape Town's Jagger Library shortly after it was gutted by fire on 18 April 2021. The Library housed the UCT Libraries’ Special Collections Library and Archive holdings. Almost every collection in the building suffered, but the Government Publications and acclaimed African Studies Collections bore the brunt of the destruction. The basements were not destroyed, and collections of Rare and Antiquarian Books, Manuscripts & Archives and African Studies housed there were salvaged in the weeks following the fire. Areas shown formerly served as a working library, reading room and staff office area.

While the tour shows the state of the library after the fire it also contains images of what the library looked like before it was destroyed.

The African Studies Collection is an internationally-renowned Africana research collection which includes extensive holdings of monographs, periodicals, ephemera, pamphlets, videos, sound recordings, maps, conference papers, and newspapers.

This panorama tour was created by the University of Cape Town's heritage site documentation specialists, Zamani Project. Zamani Project undertakes data collection and analysis, heritage communication, and training and capacity building for experts and the public so that they have access to high-quality spatial heritage data, and can learn from, conserve, and protect heritage.
